This weekend workshop will explore the fundamentals of Argentine tango through the lens of Quaker values and practices. Like Quaker worship, Argentine tango relies on grounding and centering, deep listening, inner leadings, and inspired responses. Unlike many other dances, Argentine tango is totally improvisational, which makes it more challenging (and rewarding) than other dances, as it invites higher levels of clarity, patience, generosity – and playfulness!
Starting with walking exercises, we’ll explore how we move through space alone, and then in connection with another. Throughout the weekend, we’ll develop listening skills: as we listen to our own bodies, our partner’s movement, and the ongoing connection between them. We’ll explore syncopation, pauses, pivots, and changes in direction as we move together, and we’ll experiment with different forms of embrace. The music will consist of an eclectic mix of traditional, electro, and alternative tango songs. Discussions of leadership, trust, and mindfulness will be sprinkled throughout, as will brief presentations about body mechanics and tango history.
No partner is necessary, and no prior dance experience is required. Everyone will learn both the leader and follower roles, and we’ll be rotating partners throughout all the exercises. Bring dance shoes if you have them, but leather-soled shoes also work well.
